History of the site
Birchway Eco-Community is located on the site of former allotments which are bordered by Birchway and Coldharbour Lane.
Vacant for some time, the site was overgrown and surrounded by a combination of fences and hedges. The housing around has often been referred to as to as ‘the railway estate’ - because it was constructed to house the families of railway workers. Although many railway families still live on the estate many of the houses have been sold off with many owner/occupiers and tenants of private landlords.
So better than laying empty, Paradigm have reinvigorated this space into one of the most imaginative housing schemes in the area. From allotments to eco living, this small area of Hayes will keep its green heritage for years and years to come.
